Unstable As Water
Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:
Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
Earlier in the devotional for this month I asked the question: What is water? The obvious answers really only describe its physical nature and its chemical composition, but they don’t give us much insight into what water really IS. We know what it does, but nothing about where it came from or why, and whether or not there is something very fundamental about the nature of water that we have missed completely.
We have also seen that if the Bible is true, which ought to be the belief of anyone who professes faith in Jesus Christ, then science obviously is not. How could this have happened? How could science, regarded by the majority as being a reliable source of wisdom and knowledge, have become so incredibly wrong? On January 10th we saw that the Apostle Paul describes science (the dominant paradigm), as science falsely so-called. It is merely a mockery of science, set up as an alternative to the truth so that people can assure themselves that there is no God, and live however they want. Yesterday (January 11th) we heard Isaiah tell us that the wisdom of their wise men shall perish. Her goes on to say that the wise men have turned things upside down:
Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding? (Isaiah 29:16)
This goes hand in hand with another warning about the idolatry of science from Romans Chapter 1.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (Romans 1:18-23)
This is telling us that the truth, that God created creation, is self-evident. The intricate beauty of the natural world testifies of it. It also says that the wise folk of science know the truth, because God has shown it to them, but they have chosen not to glorify God, but rather to glorify themselves. They have substituted for truth a version of events that reveres mankind as the greatest aspect of a universe with no God. Of course, they will magnanimously say that’s it’s Okay for you to believe in a god if you want, but they hold themselves as intellectually superior and regard believers to be ignorant. As a result of their choice the science worshipers have become so foolish in their thinking that they will believe anything at all, regardless of whether or not it has any actual scientific validity, so long as it appears to conform to the world view that they choose to believe.
How is it even possible for this situation to arise?
It’s due to our nature as being derived from water. I demonstrated at the beginning of the month that the conditions necessary for nucleosynthesis (the first step after the mythological “Big Bang”) are met in Genesis 1:2. All the material necessary for God to create the universe without breaking the 1st law of thermodynamics are present. Here’s the problem: water is inherently unstable. Anything created from it will also be unstable. Our passage today is about Reuben, Jacob’s first-born son. He is the one who should have received the birthright as the oldest. He should have had the honor of giving rise to the blood line of the messiah. He didn’t, that honor went to Judah. Evidently he had so little regard for his father or anyone else that he slept with his father’s concubine, Bilhah, the mother of two of his brothers. That’s water for you. This is why we have a sin nature.
Water and it’s derivatives are unstable. That’s how science can be so disastrously wrong about human origins but still produce a marvel like the iPhone. Neither science nor the iPhone can save you from the consequences of sin. This is why we need a savior: Jesus Christ. Anything that hinders you from coming to the savior is a stumbling block.
If you reject Jesus Christ because of science, science is a stumbling block.
